Birth Records in Plymouth, Massachusetts
Plymouth birth records are maintained locally by the Plymouth Town Clerk and at the state level by the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics, which holds copies of all birth records registered statewide since 1926. Because Plymouth's town clerk website was not accessible at the time of this writing, the RVRS and its online ordering service are the most reliable starting points for getting a certified Plymouth birth certificate today.
Plymouth Overview
Plymouth Town Clerk Birth Records
The Plymouth Town Clerk maintains birth records for all births that occurred in Plymouth or where parents were town residents at the time of birth. Plymouth operates as a town under Massachusetts law, so the office is a town clerk rather than a city clerk. Birth records are registered with the local clerk and also forwarded to the state RVRS, which means copies exist at both levels for any birth since 1926.
If you can reach the Plymouth Town Clerk directly, that is worth trying. In-person requests are generally processed the same day, and local fees are lower than the state rate. Bring a valid photo ID and know your relationship to the person on the record. The subject of the record, their parents, a spouse, and adult children can all request a certified copy. Legal representatives with written authorization are also eligible.
Since Plymouth's online presence was inaccessible at the time this page was written, contact Plymouth Town Hall directly for current hours, fees, and the correct mailing address. The town is at 26 Court Street, Plymouth, MA 02360, and the general town hall number is a good starting point.
Note: Plymouth's local fee is almost certainly lower than the state fee, so it is worth the call before defaulting to the RVRS.
Ordering Plymouth Birth Records Through RVRS
The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics is located at 150 Mount Vernon Street, 1st Floor, Dorchester, MA 02125. The phone is 617-740-2600. The RVRS is open Monday through Friday from 8:45 am to 4:45 pm. It holds statewide birth records from 1926 to the present, including all Plymouth births registered in that period. When local access is uncertain, RVRS is the backup that always works.
In-person visits to the RVRS cost $20 per certified copy. Payment is by cash, check, or money order only. Credit cards are not accepted at the walk-in window. By mail, standard requests cost $32 and take 15 to 20 business days. Expedited mail requests cost $42 and process in 7 to 10 business days.
Online Birth Certificate Orders
The state processes online orders for Plymouth birth records through VitalChek at 866-300-8535. Standard online orders cost $54.00 for the first copy and $42.00 for each additional copy. Expedited orders run $62.50 for the first copy. Those amounts include the VitalChek service fee. Delivery options include standard USPS first class mail at no extra charge, UPS second day for $12.50, and UPS next day for $19.50.
When placing an order through VitalChek, you will need the subject's full name, date of birth, city of birth, and parents' names including the mother's maiden name. A valid photo ID must be uploaded. The state ordering guide at mass.gov covers the full process and confirms what documents to have ready.
Note: VitalChek processes requests against the RVRS database, not the Plymouth Town Clerk records, so the order will go to the state office regardless of whether the local clerk is reachable.
Who Can Get Plymouth Birth Records
Massachusetts limits who can receive a certified birth certificate. The person named on the record can always request a copy. Parents, spouses, and adult children of the person on the certificate are also eligible. Under MGL c.46 §2A, a certified copy carries the same legal weight as the original document and is accepted for passports, court filings, and government benefits.
Records for births to unmarried parents are restricted. Access is limited to the listed parents, the person on the record, legal guardians, and legal representatives with documentation. Come prepared with proof of your eligibility. If you are requesting on behalf of someone else, written authorization is required.
Adoptees born in Massachusetts have a separate right to their original pre-adoption birth certificates under MGL c.46 §2B, updated in November 2022. Any Massachusetts-born adoptee who is 18 or older can now request the original. The issued record will note that it was amended by adoption, but the original birth data is accessible. Proof of identity and the standard fee are required.
Plymouth Historical Birth Records
Plymouth has some of the oldest records in the country. Birth records from 1841 through 1925 are held at the Massachusetts State Archives at 220 Morrissey Boulevard in Boston. Those records are digitized and searchable online. Certified copies cost $3.00 each, and the archives accept email requests for up to five records at archives@sec.state.ma.us.
FamilySearch has free collections covering Massachusetts birth records from 1636 through 1924, along with town clerk and vital records going back to 1626. Plymouth is well represented in these collections. The New England Historic Genealogical Society at americanancestors.org is another valuable resource for Plymouth County genealogical research, with extensive collections for pre-1900 records from Plymouth towns and the broader county area.
The published "Vital Records to 1850" series, sometimes called the Tan Books, includes Plymouth vital records and is available at the State Archives, NEHGS, and many public libraries in Massachusetts.
Plymouth County Records
Plymouth is the county seat of Plymouth County, which was founded in 1685. Unlike Massachusetts counties that abolished their governments in the late 1990s, Plymouth County maintained limited county functions. Vital records in Plymouth County are not held at the county level. Each town and city keeps its own records. The Plymouth County Probate and Family Court handles adoption decrees, name changes, and guardianship orders that may connect to birth records held by local clerks.
