Find Birth Records in Framingham
Framingham birth records are kept by the Framingham City Clerk and cover births that occurred in the city or where parents were Framingham residents at the time. The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics holds parallel copies for births registered after 1926. This page covers how to get a certified birth certificate in Framingham, what it costs, what the state offers, and where to find historical Middlesex County records.
Framingham Overview
Framingham City Clerk Office
The Framingham City Clerk is located at Framingham City Hall and maintains birth records for all births that occurred in Framingham or where parents resided at the time of birth. The city became a full city in 2018 after previously operating as a town, so the office transitioned from a town clerk model to a city clerk model. The clerk's website at framinghamma.gov has current contact details and hours.
In-person visits work best if you come prepared. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. The clerk will ask about your relationship to the person on the record. The person named on the certificate, their parents, a spouse, or an adult child can each request a copy. Legal representatives with written authorization are also eligible. Framingham processes most in-person requests the same day.
Mail requests are accepted as well. Send the full name on the record, the date of birth, the city of birth, a copy of your photo ID, and payment to Framingham City Hall. Contact the clerk's office first to confirm the fee and the correct mailing address, as these details can change.
Framingham Birth Record Fees
Framingham charges a local fee for each certified birth certificate. Local clerk fees in Massachusetts typically fall between $5 and $15 per copy. Check with the Framingham City Clerk for the current rate before sending payment.
The state charges more. At the RVRS in Dorchester, the fee is $20 per copy in person, $32 by mail (standard), and $42 by mail expedited. Online orders through VitalChek run over $50 for the first copy when the service fee is included. The Massachusetts vital records fee schedule has the current state breakdown. For most Framingham residents, the local clerk is the cheaper and faster way to go.
Note: If you are ordering multiple copies for legal or administrative use, the local rate adds up to real savings compared to ordering each through the state.
Access Rules for Framingham Birth Certificates
Not everyone can get a certified copy of a birth record. Massachusetts restricts access to protect privacy. The person named on the record can always request their own copy. Parents, spouses, and adult children of the person on the certificate are also eligible. Under MGL c.46 §2A, certified copies have the full legal standing of original documents and are accepted for passports, school registration, and government benefits.
Records for births to unmarried parents are restricted. Only the parents listed on the record, the person named on the certificate, and legal guardians or representatives with proper documentation can get copies. If you fall into one of those categories, bring your supporting paperwork to the clerk's office. The clerk will verify your eligibility before issuing the certificate.
Adopted individuals have a separate right to access their original birth certificates. Under MGL c.46 §2B, updated in November 2022, any person born in Massachusetts who was adopted and is now 18 or older can request their original pre-adoption birth certificate. Proof of identity is required, and the issued record will note that it was amended by adoption. This change applies regardless of the year of birth.

Historical Framingham Birth Records
Framingham was incorporated as a town in 1700, long before statewide vital records collection began. Birth records from 1841 through 1925 are held at the Massachusetts State Archives at 220 Morrissey Boulevard in Boston. Those records are digitized and searchable online. The archives charge $3.00 per certified copy and can fill requests for up to five certificates per order. Email requests go to archives@sec.state.ma.us.
For births before 1841, contact Framingham City Hall or check the clerk's records directly, as some earlier town records survived. FamilySearch has free collections covering Massachusetts births from 1636 through 1924 and town clerk records from 1626 to 2001. These are searchable without creating an account, which makes them a good starting point for genealogical work in the Framingham area.
Middlesex County Records Connection
Framingham is in Middlesex County, though county government in Middlesex was abolished in 1997. Vital records in Massachusetts are not stored at the county level. The Framingham City Clerk holds the local copies, and the state RVRS holds the parallel state copies. However, the Middlesex Probate and Family Court in Cambridge handles adoption decrees, name changes, and guardianship orders that can connect back to or affect birth records. If you are dealing with an adoption or name change tied to a Framingham birth, that court may have relevant filings.
For a full picture of birth records in Middlesex County, see the Middlesex County records page. It covers which cities and towns maintain their own clerk offices and how the county's judicial resources fit into the broader vital records system.
